September is a busy month here on the farm. We are harvesting morning and evening and can’t keep up with all of the dahlias, even though some haven’t even bloomed yet! Labour Day weekend we entered our blooms and arrangements for judging at the Saanich Fair for the 1st time. I am happy to report that many of our dahlia and zinnia blooms won 1st and 2nd prizes on their own. Our fresh and dried arrangements also collected top prizes with our farmstand bouquet receiving special recognition! It was a great experience and now that we know a few of the rules (there are a lot of rules!) we will be back next year with more entries.

We are happy to be creating beautiful bouquets, arrangements, and embellishments for several weddings and events this fall. Each has its own theme ranging from the formal classic white and greens through to casual in vibrant colours and the rich burnt oranges and deep burgundy celebrating the fall season. Watch for our arrangements at the Dance Victoria events as we are the Floral Sponsor for the season ahead!
Don’t hesitate to contact us at the Flower Studio if you are planning for an upcoming event.

Specialty Tulip Bulb & Peony Root
Preorder Sale ON NOW!
|
|
This is our 5th annual sale!
This year we are offering a great new selection of specialty tulip varieties to choose from and even more new names to add to our list of peonies.
All the specialty tulips have been selected for colour, form, stem length, scent (if possible) and interest. The Peonies have been selected for colour, form and scent as well as early, mid and late bloom times to give us the longest season possible for harvesting
These have been curated for our farm and will be planted this fall to grow for next season’s harvest.
I have ordered a limited number of each to be available for this sale. NOTE - This is a PRE-ORDER with bulbs and roots ready for pick up, delivery or Canada-wide shipping in October.

September is a great time for blooms: Dahlias, zinnias, cosmos, lisianthus, amaranthus, scented geranium, ageratum, sedum, strawflower, sunflowers, scabiosa fama, rudbeckia, lady`s mantle, verbena, Mahogany Splendor hibiscus, chocolate cosmos, and more.

|
The hardy annuals and biennials are been sown now in the potting shed so that we have blooms for early summer next year. These include snapdragons, green mist, bells of Ireland, yarrow, chocolate lace flower, calendula, nigella, sweet peas, dianthus, godetia, foxglove & poppies. The seedlings will be planted out in the field and big greenhouse in early October and will develop their roots and leaves over the winter and will be blooming for us in late spring/early summer just as the bulbs finish and the summer annuals are not quite ready.

Our Fall Floral Design and Wreath workshops are now posted on the website!
Join us for a wonderful afternoon working with beautiful blooms and botanicals. No experience necessary!
Also, we have been hosting small private workshops for groups of friends, family and colleagues. If you are looking for an activity to fill an afternoon with inspiration, learning, creativity and beauty connect with us to set up a session. Our workshops can be tailored to the information and skills you would like to be presented. We can accommodate groups of 3-8 people.

The dahlias are in overdrive right now. The tubers we planted through May and June are blooming like crazy! The ones we planted in July are filling in and some are just starting to bloom.
We have dahlia bunches available on the farmstand, on the website and at Moss Street market. Don’t miss enjoying a bunch or two this fall
|
|
All of our dahlias get ‘pinched’ so that they don’t have stems as thick as broomsticks for arrangements. When cutting your dahlias for blooms cut deep down a few sets of leaves on the stem. You will sacrifice a few side buds but your dahlias will reward you with more long strong stems coming up in no time!
We do have some dahlias for sale on the website that we have planted into 1 gallon pots. There is still quite a good selection.

I expect our selection will be larger than ever with close to 200 varieties! Some varieties I will have oodles of tubers and others just a few. These will be stored here over the winter and will be ready for pick up, delivery and Canada-wide shipping in April, once the chance of freezing has passed.
