Spring Newsletter
We have sure had spring weather lately with a little bit of everything and a lot of rain! The rainy days have kept me inside getting my final seed orders complete for spring/summer succession planting. It is also the time I get my fall peony root, tulip, daffodil and other bulbs and corms ordered for fall planting (and our annual sale).
Our spring bulb and corm order arrived and we got them planted right away! Mini-gladiolas, toad lilies, and 4 different varieties of nerine will all be a part of our bouquets and arrangements over the years to come.
I have been harvesting hellebores, daffodils, anemones, grape muscari, forget-me-nots, budded cherry and crabapple branches and I am appreciating all of the qualities of these plants that have established on the farm and don’t need to be replanted each year.

Our Spring Flower Share will be starting in Mid April featuring our specialty tulips, hellebores and anemones followed by ranunculus and more! The Flower Share Collections lets you buy flowers for spring, summer, fall or for the whole year. We have put together several different collections of hand tied bouquets and arrangements in a vase to be picked up or delivered. These could be considered CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture) as they are prepaid to help us to get our crops in the field, tended and harvested for you to enjoy.

On The Farm & In The Greenhouse
|
|
We have been using the mild weather to get all of our planting beds and fields weeded and mulched. As we are Certified Organic, we use the certified organic compost from Farm to Garden as a mulch as well as an amendment to our soil. (They deliver if you need some!)
Ranunculus & Anemone corms that were soaked and planted in crates in the FAB are now outside and showing green. I can’t wait to see the new Butterfly, Moderna & Koyfish Ranunculus.
The ranunculus that sprouted in the fall are now budded and if we have a few more warm days then hopefully we will be harvesting blooms in a week or so. Anemones grown in the field continue to be harvested daily.

|
Roses, hydrangeas and lavender have been pruned. Perennials have been cleaned up and some have been lifted, divided and potted up and are available for sale up at the Flower studio.
|
|
Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’, Thornless blackberries, Hypericum magic – creamy white berries, Scented Geranium. Scabiosa rumelica aka Knautia Macedonia and more to come.
We still have a few of our Peony roots available on the website or the farm. We potted these up in the fall and they are sprouting already!

I have been adding to my hellebore collection and have brought in extra premium single and double hellebore plants for anyone interested in having some in their garden. These are not on the website or on the farmstand. You will have to come up to the Flower Studio to see them for yourself.
Singles $30, Doubles $40

Sowing seeds and more seeds - Hardy annuals, perennials and now the summer annuals like zinnias, and cosmos are being sown. We continue to take cuttings of the heirloom chrysanthemums to fill all of our orders and hopefully have some extras!
We always try to sow seeds earlier in the season and we are always amazed at how quickly they germinate when we just wait until March to get this job done.

You will be notified when your orders are ready for pick up, to be delivered or shipped. This will be mid April once the tubers all start to ‘eye up’ and closer to the appropriate time for planting.
We will update our website with additional tubers we have available once this newsletter has been mailed out.
We have a selection of NEW IMPORTS - We have too many for our fields so we will be selling extras on the website – these will be noted as imports (they have not been grown on our farm).
If you would like to add to your previous order, we will combine your orders so please note your previous order number in the comment section and select the pick up option.

These were so popular last year, and so many of you have been asking, that we have decided to offer these again. NOTE: These are for local orders only and are not available for shipping.
These tiny plugs will be ready to plant in your garden when you pick them up them. They love the cool weather to get their roots established and once the warm weather arrives, they really start to grow. They are each named and have a number 1, 2, or 3, with 1 being the varieties that will bloom first and 3 blooming later in the season.
We will be offering each variety - 5 for $10

These are so special! In our greenhouse these grow to about knee high. Their blooms smell like chocolate! They bloom all summer. They are a zone 9 plant so if they are in a sheltered dry spot in your garden and well mulched they may survive. But if you want to keep them to over-winter indoors they should have produced little tubers, that you can lift and store as you would your dahlias or potted up in soil.
These will be offered as 4 plugs for $15.

Keep your eye on our website because we will be having some spring workshops in mid April!

All of a sudden we are all back into the rhythm of the season. It is time to get things ready and done! I look forward to getting out to do my early morning walk around the farm. So many birds are back in the garden and all the different plants are doing what they should. Shrubs and trees are budding, Solomon seal, hostas & foxtail lilies are pushing up out of the ground and our rhododendrons, daffodils and hellebores have been putting on the main show so far. Tulips and ranunculus blooms are coming very soon.
This is now the start of my 6th season as a flower farmer and while all that we are doing is familiar and we have done it before, it seems there is always more to learn - as the saying goes – the more you know, the more you realise you don’t know. I believe this is what makes people life long gardeners. So much to learn….
As always, thanks for all of your support. It is much appreciated.
Elbows up!
Twyla
