In the fields and gardens, we are still busy clearing beds, planting hardy annuals, getting the last of the bulbs planted (new daffodil varieties), weeding, cutting back perennials and mulching. We ended up planting our new peony roots in pots for the winter as I don’t have the new field ready for them. Note - There are still peonies, now potted, available on the website. The main focus this week is getting dahlia clumps dug, washed and tubers counted for the December 1st pre-sale. Dahlia dividing will start soon and will carry on throughout the winter months until the job is complete. In the Big Greenhouse we are still harvesting scented geranium, chocolate cosmos, eucalyptus and our heirloom Chrysanthemums. Yes they are still blooming and it is almost December!
Some ideas for the spring – just have to see how it goes. Chocolate cosmos create small tubers similar to dahlias – who knew??!! I’m going to leave them in the ground as long as possible as they are still pushing out a few blooms for us. They are zone 9 - we are zone 8 – so last year we lost most of them in the cold snap so this year I’m going to lift them and see if I can get some viable tubers to offer. Maybe some scented geranium cuttings as well…just have to see how much gumption we have for this when the time comes. Will keep you posted on these ideas
